The team becomes the eighth from Australia to win the STEM Racing (formerly F1 in Schools) World Championship.
Team Lunar from Brighton Grammar School in Australia has become the eighth team from Australia to be crowned STEM Racing (formerly F1 in Schools) World Champions.
The group of five Year 11 students from the school in south-east Melbourne beat 82 other teams from 33 countries at the largest running of the STEM Racing World Finals.
Team Manager, Leo Jansen, said that the team’s connectedness was instrumental in their success.
“We came third last year, and we were so determined to go two better, so to achieve that is just awesome,” he said.
“Essentially, it’s like running a miniature business and getting this experience at such a young age, there’s nothing like this. It’s put a new perspective on STEM as well, so we’re all looking at related careers.”
The team also won the Best Engineered Car and Fastest Car awards.
Liam Jones, Lunar’s CAM Engineer, and Max Zylberman, the team’s Engineering Director, were also selected for the Komatsu-Williams Engineering Academy, which will see them join 8 other students for the mentoring program jointly led by the Japanese multinational and Formula 1 team.
STEM Racing Founder and Chairman, Andrew Denford, said that this year’s World Finals was one of the most competitive in the competition’s 25 years history.
“The standard of work achieved by every team has been outstanding and it blows me away with the depth of engineering knowledge, the innovations developed by the students and their passion for STEM Racing,” he said.
“Lunar had to work extremely hard to take the World Champions title and are worthy winners, well done.”
Blue Wolves from Germany took home second place, and SBA Unity Racing from the United Kingdom finished third on the podium.
Peter Russell was the Digital Communications and Brand Manager for Infinitude, the F1 in Schools World Record holders.
